March 16, 2020

On Thursday, year 1 really enjoyed cooking brownies au chocolat (chocolate brownies) :D... As well as singing and dancing to French songs. Our class favourite was called Les Petit Poison! Ask your children how to say big fish in French and see if they remember. We practised saying and learning simple French phrases to and used them through out the day. It was brilliant! Have a look at some of the memories we created.

Silly Science Workshop

March 11, 2020

In year 1 and 2 we have had a silly science workshop in the afternoon and really enjoyed it!  We absolutely loved all the experiments that we saw and learnt all about the different forces. The silly scientist even let us take part in the experiments which was great because we watched our friends become the silly scientist's apprentices. It was great!  We learnt how fire is made as well as how powerful gasses can be.

He even took us outside for the grand finale in watching mentos explode from a coke bottle. The silly scientist called it the mentos rocket.

Rain Gauge Making

March 11, 2020

After the silly science workshop we came back into the class with our super science hats on and became meteorologists.

We have been learning all about different weather in seasons as well as day lengths.  The children discovered that Summer is the season with the longest day length and Winter has the shortest day length. Once we completed our challenge question in science, we moved on to creating a rain gauge out of recycled bottles. This was so much fun because we predicted how much rain would fill the bottle in one week! We stuck on a measuring tape and decorated them to make them unique.

We cannot wait to find out how much rain actually falls in Bilston.  Will the water in our rain gauge reach 200mm?  We shall see.

Healthy Eating

March 03, 2020

To end our unit on healthy eating, we had a visit from representatives of Warburtons! We were taught how to make healthy sandwiches. We added ham, cheese or tuna and then added salad vegetables including lettuce, cucumber and tomato. Finally, we sampled some of their scrumptious baked goodies…..delicious!

January 29, 2020

Year One played the role of detectives during their science lesson. They solved various clues to reunite Ella with her teddy bear. Everyone enjoyed using their senses during the investigation, including their sense of taste when trying the dark chocolate, raisins and lemon!

TTRockstars Day

January 10, 2020

Today was TTRockstars Day and the children dressed up as fabulous rockstars! In Year 1 we played 'Hit The Button' using our knowledge of multiplication and counted the beats in music by reciting our 2’, 5’s and 10’s.  We listened to QUEEN, ‘We Will Rock You’ and created a song to help us remember the 2 times table. We rocked out so much, we felt like real RocknRolla’s.

Toy Peg Dolls

December 20, 2019

Our Year One pupils have been transformed into Santa’s Elves and have been busy making toy peg dolls! They have spent time working through the design process before completing their dolls yesterday. We are very proud of their efforts and hope they have a lovely time playing with their new toys.

Christmas Fun in Year 1

December 20, 2019

With Christmas creeping near and chocolates being devoured, we have been ever so excited with the activities planned all throughout December. We have been practising hard for the play alongside year 2 and were able to perform our hearts out by learning and singing all 6 songs! WOW!

Our teachers are so proud of us. Nevertheless we have also brought our dancing shoes at the ready for the annual Christmas party- full of festive cheer, tasty snacks and a well awaited visit from Santa!

We have also made Lexi peg dolls as part of our Design and Technology project which we can't wait to share with you. We learnt all about old toys and new toys and found out that children in the past played with objects made of wood and not iPads or electric toys.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday, celebrating with family and friends and can't wait to start the new year and new term with you all.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year xx

Practical Maths Skills

December 10, 2019

Here at Loxdale we work on the theory that children need to hold maths in their hands before they can hold it in their heads.  This week Year One are using their practical maths skills to support their knowledge of subtraction.

Rhythm and Rhyme

December 05, 2019

We have been discovering all about poems in literacy. The children have enjoyed learning and reciting the poem, 'nobody likes me'- They have performed the poem in groups and made their own actions after learning it and reading it collaboratively.

Year 1 have enjoyed doing this and learnt all about rhythm and rhyme, some of the children even thought about how rhyme makes things easier to remember and began to think about our maths fact of the week :)

We cannot wait for Christmas as we get ready for our production soon!

Mrs Mason's Parents Visit

November 26, 2019

This afternoon Mrs Mason's parents came into the year 1 classes so we could interview them about their childhoods. Before they arrived we worked hard with our partners thinking of questions to ask. Later, we sorted through the new information to compare our childhood's with theirs. Some things had changed a lot, such as, they played out in the road in the street as there were very few cars and they only had a stocking of fruit and nuts for Christmas! We also found out that they played hopscotch, snakes and ladders, skipping and had marbles just the same as we do!

Year 1 News

November 13, 2019

We have been very busy in Year 1 over this past week! As it was Remembrance Day were taught about how brave people were during past wars and why we wear poppies to remember them. We printed poppies using potatoes and carrots pressed into red and black paint.

As the autumn weather had been kind for a few days we used the Trim Trail again and we impressed Mrs Mason with how confident we are becoming on the apparatus.

We highlighted Anti-Bullying Week by celebrating differences on Odd Socks Day - what a great way to learn that we are all different!

Finally we got 'hand-on' by exploring Victorian toys during our topic afternoon and compared them to the modern toys that we play with now.

Trim Trail

November 06, 2019

The year 1 children have been on the Trim Trail for the first time! They used great team-work skills to communicate taking turns and showed marvellous resilience in their willingness to complete the course.  One of the children even shouted, "We can't wait to have more fun on the Trim Trail with our friends."

Cultural Week

October 22, 2019

In recognition of cultural week, this week, the children have been learning all about the life of Benjamin Zephaniah and his famous poem, 'Eat My Words.'  Together, we have created a Talk for Writing prompt to help us recall the poem.  They have really enjoyed learning the poem and about his brilliant life.  The children clapped along to the rhythm of the poem and watched live performances of him which they really enjoyed.

Addition / World Problems

October 17, 2019

The children have been learning about addition all week and are now using problem solving skills to solve a word problem. Today they have been working hard to solve word problems using their reading and comprehending skills. We used real fruit to  introduce the problem solving lesson to the children where they stood together and we thought carefully about how to make our own word problem.   They were all engaged and all thought carefully about how important it was to link maths problems to what happens in real life.

After that, the children worked in groups and illustrated their thinking on a whiteboard.  Some of the children even had a go at writing their own.

Ask your children to give you another word for 'add?' :)

Year 1 - Exploring the Local Area

October 14, 2019

Year 1 have been learning all about our local area. This week we have been completing maps by adding the various features around Nettlefolds Park.
